Type 3 Chi-Nu Medium tank (Japanese)

Description The Type 3 Chi-Nu was a medium tank developed by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Designed in 1943, it was intended to counter the American M4 Sherman tanks, which had proven superior to earlier Japanese models. The Chi-Nu was an improved version of the Type 1 Chi-He, featuring a more powerful Type 3 75 mm tank gun, which was one of the largest Japanese tank guns used during the war. The Chi-Nu was powered by a Mitsubishi Type 100 air-cooled diesel engine, producing 240 horsepower, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 39 km/h. The tank had a crew of five and was equipped with a single Type 97 7.7 mm machine gun for secondary armament. Its armour ranged from 20 to 50 mm, providing better protection compared to its predecessors. Despite its advanced design, the Chi-Nu saw limited production due to Japan’s strained industrial capacity and the prioritization of resources for the navy and air force. Only between 144 and 166 units were built. The Chi-Nu did not see combat during the war, as all produced units were retained for the defence of the Japanese homeland in anticipation of an Allied invasion.
